Pretend Soup and Other Real Recipes: A Cookbook for Preschoolers & Up

Food for the Pre-Schooler's Soul!!!
What a find! Mollie Katzen and Ann Henderson have compiled a delicious assortment of fun-to-make recipes for kids. My daughter was THRILLED to be able to make and serve Blueberry Pancakes for Sunday breakfast. The experience was a terrific boost for her. You could virtually see her self-esteem growing as she presented her culinary masterpiece to us. She also made chocolate-banana shakes for dessert last night. The recipes are so well illustrated that she is able (at 4 and a half years old) to verify that she has included all of the ingredients. She is eagerly anticipating her next cooking adventure. I tip my chef's hat to the authors for combining real food with recipes that are truly suited for kids. Does anyone know if the Culinary Institute of America offers scholarships? I think she's ready!

Really cute... recipies are fun and yummy
My daughter is only 3, but she participates a lot in these recipies. Lots of fun.
The names they give the foods and the pictures also make children more willing to eat the food. If you have a picky eater he/she will surely eat the creations from this book.

I appreciate that they didnt use a lot of fancy ingreadiants or get too rediculous with cutting things into shapes etc. like many kid's recipie books

The hide-and-seek muffins are awsome! they taste like shortcake w/ the strawberry baked right in!

Great cookbook for kids!
Before buying this book, my 3-year-old daughter had pretty much refused any kind of vegetable. She just didn't want to put anything remotely vegetable-like in her mouth. She got so excited when she saw the Salad Bar recipe. We immediately set to work and lo and behold...she loves it! Now when I ask her what she wants for dinner, her reply is almost always, "Salad Bar!"
Whoo hoo! Thanks Mollie Katzen and Ann L. Henderson! You've performed a miracle.

Rescuer
Published in Paperback by Multnomah Publishers (March, 2003)
Author: Dee Henderson
Average review score:

Another Great O'Malley Tale!!!
The Rescuer is another great O'Malley tale. The book is very well written, though Dee takes a slightly different approach to this novel. In the previous O'Malley tales, the villains are kept pretty low-key and mysterious ' the reader is working to figure out who-dun-it. In this story, the reader is given the story of the bad guys, as well as the story of Stephen O'Malley.

The previous O'Malley book, the Healer, kept me pulled in very close ' it was an emotional book on several levels. The Rescuer did not pull me in quite the same way. Stephen O'Malley is struggling on several levels ' he's feels alone (he's the last single O'Malley) and he's grieving over the death of his sister. The book had the potential to be very emotional, but it did not seem to me to catch the depth of Stephen's struggle.

The book also didn't bring me closure with the whole O'Malley clan. It makes me wonder if Henderson is leaving the door open for future O'Malley projects, even though this book is slated as the final of the series. I would love it greatly if she would continue to write about the O'Malleys. They are a great family, and in several ways model what many families should be.

Those things aside, Henderson gives us an interesting story of three jewelry thieves. She portrays the intensity of crime and distrust among thieves pretty well. The characters face the consequences of their actions that they did not consider early in their turn to crime. We also see how small beginnings become more than one can handle over time. The web becomes tangled so quickly and innocents get caught up in treachery unexpectedly.

The leading lady in this novel is blind. I thought Henderson did a good job, even if it is basic, of showing me what blind people deal with in daily life. She expanded my ability to understand and empathize with blind people.

Please do not read my review in the wrong way ' this is an excellent story. But, like the previous O'Malley story, this is not the place to begin ' read the others first. I hope you enjoy them thoroughly. I certianly have!

Great Conclusion to the O'Malley Series
Let's face it, Dee Henderson doesn't disappoint. I have recommended her books to at least half a dozen Christian fiction readers at the library where I work, and they all have loved her.

"The Rescuer" was a great book on which to end the series. My only reservation was that she didn't bring in more of the O'Malleys in this wrap-up. Kate was featured a good bit and Jack showed up several times, but it would have been nice to "see" everyone one last time. However, it was nice to see that it was Jennifer's faith that made God present to Stephen, as it had done for the other O'Malleys as well.

Not my favorite of the series, but still loved it.
I have to admit, I was a little dissapointed in this book. I LOVE the O'Malley family and I was upset that other than Kate and Dave, we hardly saw the rest of them! Otherwise, the book was great! A lot of twists and turns to this book that I didn't expect. Finally, the first O'Malley baby too! I get Dee Henderson's newletter and she says this might not be the end of the series. YEAH! I hate the thought of the series ending. I picked up Danger in the Shadows for something new once and I fell in love her characters. If you have never read her books I would strongly advise you to pick up the prequel of this series. On another note to Henderson fans, I just bought 2 of the books on cd and they are fantastic. They are a little bit abridged, but the music and the sound effects draw you in just like you are reading it for the first time. Enjoy reading all!

The Protector (O'Malley #4)
Published in Paperback by Multnomah Publishers Inc. (01 October, 2001)
Author: Dee Henderson
Average review score:

The best is yet to come...
*The Protector* is book four in the popular O'Malley series by Dee Henderson. In this installment, Jack O'Malley, resident fireman and all-around great guy, protects and eventually falls in love with former co-firewoman, Cassie Ellis. Once again, Dee Henderson does a great job of incorporating Christian teachings, romance and suspense all into one package.

A serial arsonist is on the loose, and it's up to Jack and his fellow fireman to find the culprit. Cassie, disabled and recovering from a terrible fire injury is requested to help identify the arsonist, as it's evident this arsonist sticks around to watch the show following the attack. As Jack and Cassie are involved in this exciting, dangerous case, Jack's family plans for Jennifer's return to the hospital for more chemotherapy treatment following the Christmas holidays. Jack begins to realize that because both Jennifer and Cassie place their trust in Jesus Christ, that there must be something right about it, and he begins his journey towards redemption.

I'm notorious for continually going on and on about Dee Henderson's talented writing. But once you start the series, you'll be right there with me. Enjoy!

Dee Henderson does it again!
With an ongoing series, there usually comes a book that is good, but not as good as the rest. Not so with Dee Henderson's O'MALLEY series. Each book brings us a different "family" member, yet each can stand alone with it's characters and story -and they all are great reads! Jack, the firefighter brother, is the central character of THE PROTECTOR. As in each of the O'Malley books, there is a mystery to solve (I was surprised at whodoneit!) as well as self discovery for the characters. Ms. Henderson writes characters that you can believe exist, that you can identify with as they struggle, and rejoice with as they find answers.

I really enjoyed meeting not only Jack and his friends in this book, but also Rachel, the subject of the next O'Malley book. Plus, we got up to date on the other family memebers...if you haven't read any thing from Dee Henderson - start now. If you have keep at it! THE PROCTECTOR won't let you down!

4th book of the O'Malley Series.
Dee Henderson is probably... no, not probably but she IS my favorite Christian writer!! This book is the fourth of the O'Malley series. The O'Malley family consists of seven brothers and sister, three boys and four girls. Since they were little they had been in the same orphanage and when they got out of the orphanage, they decided to 'adopt' each other, taking the name O'Malley as their family name. They all have very important jobs, Marcus is a U.S. Marshal, Kate a negotiator for hostage situations, botched-up robberies, etc., Jennifer is a doctor, Jack a fireman, Rachel a trauma psychologist, and Lisa is a forensic pathologist. This story is about Jack O'Malley, the protector.

The story begins with Fireman Jack O'Malley finding out that he has an arsonist on his hands. The person's identity is a mystery but he leaves his signature of popcorn at the fire site and hateful words on walls. Who is this person? Jack O'Malley must find out because he fears that whoever the person is... the person is escalating. And not only that, sidelined firefighter Cassie Ellis is afraid she has seen the arsonist. And she's afraid that it's someone she knows. Jack is determined to protect Cassie who to his surprise he begins to fall in love with. Can they solve the mystery before the arsonist goes to far? And can Jack trust God with the kind of faith Cassie has?

Terrific story, I just love the O'Malley series! By far, Kate O'Malley has always been my favorite character but ever since I read this book, I find Jack O'Malley to be a fun character, too. Unfortunately though, the book doesn't have as much romance in it as the other books, which was a bit disappointing for me. Another difference from the rest of the books which is good is that "The Protector" is highly suspenseful. You'll never guess who the arsonist is! Throughout the whole book I was guessing and trying to figure out but my answer was completely different from the conclusion of the story. The book also lets you have a glimpse at Rachel O'Malley getting closer to Christ and also her growing romance with Cole. I can't wait till "The Healer" comes out in July 2002. I also want to read more about Stephen, who isn't mentioned very much in any of the books. I'm curious to read about him. Also for Jennifer's story of how she fights cancer. My suggestion to you if you've never read any of Dee Henderson's books is to read first "Danger in the Shadows", then on to the O'Malley series. The Uncommon Heroes Series is also pretty great.

The first in the O'Malley series is "The Negotiator" in which the main character is Jack's sister, Kate O'Malley. The next in the O'Malley series is "The Guardian" in which the main character is Marcus O'Malley, the oldest of the O'Malley's. This is also another great book! Then after that there is "The Truth-Seeker" with Lisa O'Malley. Other books by Dee Henderson is "Danger in the Shadows" (written before "The Negotiator" whose main character is Dave Richman's sister, Sara) and "True Devotion" and "True Valor" of the Uncommon Heroes Series. Don't miss any of these books!

Man and His Symbols
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (06 June, 1969)
Authors: Carl Gustav Jung, M.L. Von Franz, and Joseph Henderson
Average review score:

Great Synopsis of Jung by Jung
There are only two titles of Jung's I know of that were meant for general consumption: _Man and His Symbols_ and _Memories, Dreams, Reflections_. The rest, most of which are part of the 20-volume Bollingen series, are too involved and technical.

Lest the reader be misled _Man and His Symbols_ is an anthology of essays by several authors, namely and in their order of appearance, Carl Jung, Joseph Hendersen, Marie-Louise von Franz, Aniela Jaffe, and Jolande Jacobi. All the co-contributors are Jungian analysts themselves and so are versed in the subjects they cover. Jung picked them himself and supervised the work until his death in 1961, after which von Franz took over. Perhaps not by accident Jung finished his own essay just 10 days before his demise. His essay (just over 90 pages out of the 400 or so pages) touches, naturally, on the unconscious, the very crucial subject of dreams, the archetypes, extraversion/introversion, religion, good and evil, among other topics. Given the scope, this essay of his offers a sort of synopsis of his worldview and life's work, perhaps one of the best summaries since it was his last published piece.

Amongst Jung's books that I've read, his essay in this anthology is by far one of the most engrossing. Unfortunately I have to eke out a living like most of you so I can only savor it in installments. Of course I highly recommend this volume if only to whet your appetite for Jung's psychology, a psychology that has not only served me well, but continues to fascinate me, a psychology that is faithful to its roots--a true logos of the psyche.

Insightful-The unconscious examined with facinating results
This book offers the layperson an insightful view of the workings of the unconscious mind. It explains the function of symbols in our lives and how they express themselves in our dreams. Jung's archetypes are the human emotions, symbolically expressed through the dream images visited nightly in our sleep. And through the maze of the emotions one will find a metaphysical (spiritual) foundation, properly expressed in the symbolic forms hidden in the deep unconscious realms of the psyche. Jung is talking about the soul.

Symbols Important to Human Psyche
This is the last and perhaps the most important book written by Dr. Carl Gustav Jung. He was among the first to interpret dreams and amazingly this book came about *because* of a dream. Jung dreamt he was talking about this topic to a large audience who were *not* psychiatrists and psychologists - evidently *his* unconcsious put it's stamp of approval on this project! This book is a great introduction to the "hidden" meaning of the symbols used in legends, medieval archetecture, classic books, and ancient myths as well as dreams. Patterns of psychic growth and development, individuation and transcendence are explained along with other psychological terms with real life examples at times. It is not about depth psychology or sociopathic problems.
One chapter was written by C.G. Jung, the others were written by his eminent followers, among whom are: M.L. von Frantz, Joseph L. Henderson, Angela Jaffe, and Jolande Jacobi. This book is a "must have" for anyone who is interested in learning more about human behavior from the "inside out". Erika B.

Trace Evidence: The Hunt for an Elusive Serial Killer
Published in Hardcover by Scribner (March, 1998)
Author: Bruce Henderson
Average review score:

Decent straight-forward account of I-5 serial killer.
This is a good, straight-forward account of how the Sacramento sheriffs and San Joaquin County Sheriff's Deptartment worked together to hunt down a serial killer in the 1980's. The story gets very interesting when the police have identified the killer but need to gather the evidence necessary to charge him with the murders. If you want to read a fantastic book (one of the best true crime novels I ever read) by the same other try "And the Sea Will Tell." Vincent Bugliosi co-authored that book with Henderson.

I couldn't put this book down!!!
I love to read, and I rarely find a book that I didn't want to stop reading, but this was one of them!! Bruce Henderson does a fantastic job bringing all of the victims, police, and suspects to life that you feel like you are watching the events happen. He walks you through the last days of the victims, throught the investigations and the trial with the greatest of ease that before you know it you've read 130 pages in one sitting. I didn't want to stop reading, and I thouroughly enjoyed the update of all the characters at the end of the book to let you know what they went on to do after this investigation was over. I highly suggest that you get this book if you are interrested in any sort of true-crime readings!! You won't be disappointed! I know I wasn't!!!

excellent reporting and writing
Unlike some true crime writers, Bruce Henderson doesn't inject himself into the story. This is a well-written, informative, and riveting read. I've read a lot of true crime books, and this is by far the best! BUY THIS BOOK!

The Burning of Her Sin
Published in Paperback by Barclay Books, LLC (01 June, 2002)
Author: Patty G. Henderson
Average review score:

story is OK, editing is abysmal
The story itself was all right, but the quality of editing was so poor that it was difficult to read this book. There were typos, grammatical errors, and ridiculous spelling errors throughout (for example, a Spanish speaker says "see" instead of "si"). The writing could stand to be tightened up a bit. All in all, a decent effort that could have been much improved by a competent editor.

A Spooky Mystery
If you like strong women characters, meet Brenda Strange, a wealthy lawyer who is a dead ringer for Princess Diana. Brenda has everything going for her, looks, money, and brains, about to become partner in a prestigious law firm. And then, in one terrifying moment, her life is changed forever. A disgruntled former client goes on a killing spree, leaving many of her co-workers dead and Brenda was at first thought dead. But when she comes back, it is a slow, difficult recovery from her near death experience, so she and her lover decide to move to Tampa, Florida into the house of their dreams, hoping to speed her re-entry into the land of the living. But after she and Tina move into Malfour House, an old Victorian mansion located in an exclusive community for the rich, she begins to feel the past closing in on her and ghosts screaming for her help in finding peace and justice. When no one believes her about her feelings, Brenda decides to revive her career as a private investigator. As she begins to travel a trail of love, betrayal, murder, Santeria curses and greed almost a hundred years old, she begins to realize that the past and the present are hopelessly intertwined and that either one could prove fatal. The Burning of Her Sin is a dark, almost gothic style mystery that moves seamlessly between the past and the present in a story that you will make you want to lock the door and read it undisturbed from beginning to end.

Top Notch Paranormal/Supernatural Mystery
The Burning of Her Sin is a five star entry into an often overlooked mystery sub-genre: Paranormal/Supernatural Mystery. While I would classify this as more supernatural, others may call it a paranormal.

Brenda Strange is the main character in what appears to be the first in a series. We see Brenda first as a lawyer but as the story unfolds, circumstances push her into another aspect of her career: Private Investigator. But she's no ordinary private detective. After a near death experience, Brenda Strange has become "sensitive." She can see, feel and smell things others can't.

Set in a big, spooky house, Malfour, this book has all the feel of a dark gothic with ghosts, a mysterious religion and weird characters, but at it's core is the classic mystery. The book and I assume the rest of the series is set in Tampa, Florida and the author has captured a great sense of place. You can soak in all the atmosphere.

The relationship between Brenda and Tina and the rest of the characters ring true and from the first pages, Ms. Henderson grabs you and spins a tale of suspense.

You will want to read this book in one sitting. I was sorry to see it end and I can't wait for the next Brenda Strange book. I hope Ms. Henderson doesn't keep us waiting.

The Mist-Filled Path: Celtic Wisdom for Exiles, Wanderers, and Seekers
Published in Paperback by New World Library (July, 2002)
Authors: Frank Henderson Maceowen and Tom Cowan
Average review score:

A Captivating Soul Journey
I picked up this book on my recent travels here to the United States. I was particularly drawn to comments on the back of the book; advance praise from three well-known Celtic writers and others of note. I have just finished reading it and must say that I enjoyed it thoroughly. I completely concur with the other reviewers who have given this book high marks. The Mist-Filled Path was a joy to read. It combines a number of features in a masterful way, including personal and historical storytelling, pre-Christian Celtic ideas and neo-Platonist concepts, and the account of Frank's personal journey of rediscovering his Celtic roots is a wonderful and inspiring example of someone becoming steeped in the Celtic spirit today... This book clearly expresses the best of the Celtic soul, not only of its antecedent forms, but also proposing a much needed ethic for today. Certainly this is not a book for strident Celtic scholars or tight-laced historians, nor does Mr. MacEowen make such grandiose claims. To the contrary, he declares humbly in the pages of this book that it is a spiritual reflection for the here and now, one which I was deeply served by.

True Celtic Spirit
A truly grand book! I came to this book with no expectations in mind. I don't tend to read "Celtic spiritual" books, as most of them seem silly to me. I am more of a fan of hard facts and history, but I found myself pleasantly surprised by The Mist-Filled Path. The author talks about Celtic history and our modern society in a way that was oddly healing for me to read. I also greatly valued hearing of the unique experiences of this brother, as he helped me to see that living a spiritual life that is connected to the earth and my ancestors IS possible. I am ready for his next one! Namaste'.

A Truly Moving and Powerful Book
I was immediately drawn to this book from its beautful cover. It is a book whose cover and title lives up to its contents. What a powerful, honest, gripping, adventurous, and stirring book. I felt blessed to read it. It brings together the best of the Celtic spirit, both in ancient and new ways that are relevant to us all, whoever we are. The Mist-Filled Path offers a helpful way of thinking and spiritual practice to anyone, whatever their culture might be, because the vision of the book is of an enlightened society where everyone can be truly and fully themselves. This book is a combination of Celtic sacred teachings and teaching stories, with a real call to action for each of us to investigate our lives in a new and fresh way. I was left with such a feeling of empowerment and hope in my life from Frank's words.

GOD.com: A Diety for the New Millennium
Published in Paperback by Dorrance Publishing Co (01 March, 2002)
Authors: John A., M.D. Henderson and John A. Henderson
Average review score:

GOD.COM
Whatever your religion - or lack of religion - this is a book that will make you re-think all the religous dogma you've learned from any upbringing or current belief.
The focus of the book is that all organized religions, without exception over centuries, have had many social and politcal agendas - surprisingly enough, common sense morality has never been on the top of the list. For the most part, good words have been followed by bad deeds. For this reason, many of our greatest leaders historicaly have not been proponents of organized religion. They may well have believed in God, but only through their own wisdom, saw through the flaws of organized religion.
God.Com makes you think about this - especially in the context of the current religious turmoil between East and West. Even if you're not "religious", lot's of people are and you need to be aware of the consequences!

A Literate Delight
Regardless of one's religious preferences, or lack of them, this is a book to be enjoyed. Authored by John Henderson, a retired air force colonel and practicing physician, every page is filled with useful and highly literate philosophy presented with gentle wisdom. Heavily sprinkled with quotes from three thousand years of observers of our religious thoughts and practices, Henderson offers readers a new approach to our ideas about Gods, life, and living. This book offends no one, yet educates us all with humor and common sense. One must read it, to understand. It was with great pleasure that I did.

Thought provoking
A must read for all God-fearing people. This book is a courageous exspose` of thoughts which many people have, but are afraid to express.

McNally's Alibi
Published in Audio Cassette by Chivers Sound Library (October, 2002)
Authors: Lawrence Sanders, Vincent Lardo, and Adam Henderson
Average review score:

My thoughts on McNally's Alibi
I think Vincent Lardo has done a wonderful job in taking over the Archy McNally series where Lawrence Sanders left off and I really enjoyed this latest book in the series. On the positive side, I was happy to see the wonderful descriptions of Ursi's marvelous cooking as well as Archy's eclectic wardrobe. On the negative side, I would have liked to have seen more dialogue with Lolly Spindrift and I was annoyed at how much he "dumbed down" Al Rogoff. Any true Archy McNally fans will be very disappointed at how stupid Al is portrayed in this latest novel and as anyone knows, Archy would never associate with someone that "low rent".

strong Archy tale
Renowned collector Deci Fortesque hires Palm Beach private sleuth Archy McNally to find an alleged original complete text of Truman Capote's Answered Prayers. Archy quickly learns that Claudia Lester asserts that she possessed the manuscript, but her former lover Matthew Harrigan stole it from her. Matthew insists he took nothing and that Claudia is just a former lover causing him trouble.

Antiques dealer Rodney Whitehead informs the sleuth that neither Claudia nor Matthew is credible not that Rodney is any better. The search turns nasty when the supposed owner of the Capote manuscript is found dead in the sleazy Crescent Hotel not long after Archy visited the place. Police Lieutenant Georgia O'Hara knows Archy is holding out on her, but he refuses to reveal anything that might interfere with completing his client's assignment as the fee is too good.

When Lawrence Sanders died a few years ago and Vincent Lardo took over the McNally franchise, this reviewer howled about another series of lite books. Several novels later, this reviewer still howls that Mr. Sanders would have been proud to claim the Lardo books as his own. The latest MCNALLY'S ALIBI is a strong novel containing an intriguing investigative story line and three women making Archy's life miserable in different ways. Fans of Mr. Sanders, McNally, or a strong private investigative novel will want to read Mr. Lardo's latest take and like this reviewer demand early release of another Arch book ASAP.

Harriet Klausner

Fun with Archie in Palm Beach--between girls and blackmail
When confidential investigator Archie McNally is hired to deliver a blackmail payment, he figures it is money in the bank. But Archie hadn't been counting on ...

Fans of Archie McNally will be overjoyed to see him back in action. His off-again-on-again relationship with the beautiful Connie is more off than on in this novel and Archie continues to battle with the question of his single status. That Archie got a little bit back from his co-workers and friends kept McNally's Alibi from being as smug or superior as some other novels in this series.

Author Vincent Lardo delivers a fast-paced and enjoyable read. Archie's observations on the personalities of Palm Beach, Florida, the foibles of the rich, and Archie's own reasoning to wear another pink shirt add to the depth of the novel.
